Deck board
One of the boards that make up the top or bottom surface of a pallet.
Deck boards are the boards nailed across the stringers or blocks to form the pallet's top deck, which carries the load, and bottom deck, which spreads it onto the floor or rack. The board at each edge of the top deck, the lead board, takes the most impact from forklifts and breaks most often.
Broken deck boards are the main thing a pallet repair line fixes. The damaged board is cut out and replaced, often with a board salvaged from another pallet during remanufacture. A pallet with one or two broken deck boards and sound stringers is usually repairable rather than scrap.
When sorting at the dock, a simple rule is that broken deck boards mean 'repairable' and broken stringers or blocks mean 'scrap', unless your recycler tells you otherwise. See sorting at receiving.
